iPad to offer 30,000 free books

For those that were worried the only way to access information on the iPad is by digging out some cash to purchase the privilege, there is some good news as a new source from the NDA has revealed that there are some iBooks that can be accessed without spending a penny.

This is because the iPad is actually going to come equipped with 30,000 public domain free e-books, which should help you start off with your reading list since you only have to log into the iBookstore to get to them.

The free books are coming from Project Gutenberg, which is a project that has archived thousands of public domain books into digital editions via the Internet.  As a bonus, all of the free titles are DRM-free which is of course much different than any of the content that you have to pay for.

There are two major reasons that Apple may have decided to offer the free books starting with the iPad’s launch.  The first reason is probably to stop any third party companies from profiting off of public domain content which may peeve some of the developers who already have apps ready in the books section of the app store, but at least customers will be happy.

The second reason is because the company is probably nervous about the fact that the iPad will seem somewhat content light when it launches and adding in the public content titles should help increase the stock within the iBookstore.
