TalkTalk launched a new deal yesterday that offers customers a chance to get free broadband for up to a year including weekend and evening calls.  In order to get the free call time, consumers must agree to an 18 month contract and pay the line rental for TalkTalk at £11.49 per month.

The deal is basically the Essentials package from the provider which offers free 24MB broadband, free evening and weekend, free router, and a 40GB monthly download allowance, only instead of paying £6.99 a month plus line rental it’s free.

Broadbandandchoices.co.uk product director, Michael Philips, stated that offering a year of free calls and broadband is a cutthroat move by TalkTalk in an effort to get new customers out of a market that is increasingly becoming hard to manoeuvre in.

Philips added that the move may however remind some of the 2006 TalkTalk offer for free broadband which caused many to sign up but resulted in disaster since the company could not keep up with the high demand.

He stated that this time things should run smoother since they have been able to build the company’s image and is top in customer satisfaction now.

The savings are estimated to be about £143.89 per year for customers of BT Talk and Surf that switch to the new TalkTalk plan instead.

Senior director of TalkTalk, Max Alexander, stated that the ISP will soon offer customers a set-top box for free once Project Canvas is officially launched. Alexander informed consumers of the coming release at the annual Marketforce and Institute of Economic affairs London Future of Broadcasting Conference.

The joint venture that includes BT, Five, Channel 4, ITV, BBC, Arqiva, and TalkTalk was the main topic of discussion this year at the conference.

Normally, a set-top box that is compatible with Project Canvas runs around £200, but now with the purchase and contract of selected TalkTalk broadband bundles the device will come free.

There was speculation at the conference that once Project Canvas is launched it will likely be renamed and referred to as ‘Youview.’

The use of a set top box that allows internet streaming will offer viewers the chance to watch video on demand via stream on the TV without the use of a computer.

TalkTalk has already made plans to avoid disappointed customers by discouraging consumers with low line speeds from purchasing the product.  At the same time one can assume this will give TalkTalk the chance to promote their fast broadband package bundles.

Viewers that have low broadband speeds likely will find it hard to stream any content during the peak viewing times.
