Wooden Books, the arts publisher based in Glastonbury, announced that the company will now put its entire library of books posted online for free reading.

The move is unprecedented and will be assuredly closely watched by others in the book trade. The new website that will offer the free access will launch to the public on February 1st, 2010.

The site is under development with E-commerce specialists, Egonet, and will allow users to browse the entire content of all of its books from cover to cover using a new search facility that allows readers to digitally flip each page on their own and skip around in the book.

Access is only offered for twenty minutes per day at which point readers can choose whether they want to purchase the actual book in print edition or purchase the e-format of the novel. Page content of each of the books will also be searchable in full glory via search engines.

John Martineau, the founder publisher of Wooden Books came up with the idea that he sees as a unique shopping experience for online consumers.

He stated that as online retailing and web technology becomes more advanced it is now harder for retailers to stand out among their competitors, thus as a small publisher this is an innovative way to stay on top of the market and bring in more web traffic.

Martineau continued to say that the company’s hope is that in the same way people browse in a bookshop and then decide to purchase books they will browse online and then choose to purchase books.
