A new registration scheme will allow anglers to fish from eight park lakes located in Liverpool for free.  The scheme has been met with a great deal of positivity with many stating it is the perfect example of how local authorities should address fishing.

With council run water angling under threat across the nation and a very present risk that fisheries such as Cusworth Hall in Doncaster will be taken away, the Liverpool Council is making an effort to work with the Environment Agency and anglers to improve opportunities for fishing at all of its park lakes.

However, there is always the risk of local assets such as public spaces and parks getting taken advantage of, with user groups with their own motives involved, but the Liverpool City Council has stated that with the right dialogue and support all the groups can work together.

In fact, it was dialogue between the anglers and the EA that helped the council discover the best way to start managing its water regions better so that they do not fall apart.

Derek Dottie, the Liverpool parks estate manager, stated that they knew that a lot of anglers were fishing but had not taken the time to interact with them.

He added that since they have the council has been able to see the best way to support anglers and overhaul their park strategy allowing them to see just how important it is that the waters are managed properly so that everyone can benefit.
