Harry Hill makes cameo appearance in friend’s short film

Harry Hill is most famous for his appearances on You’ve Been Framed and TV Burp. Most known for his comedic appearances on television, people will be able to see in a completely different way if they head to the Theatre Royal in Margate.

Mr Hill grew up in Staplehurst in Kent and from there went on to train as a doctor but eventually left the profession to pursue a career in comedy. He has recently appeared in a cameo role in a friend’s short movie that is going to be premiering at the comedy film Festival in Margate, Kent.

The annual film festival which is called 2 Days Laughter Comic Film Screening is put on by Beeping Bush Productions and every year it is famous for bringing comedy fans to the seaside town of Margate. This is the fifth year that the competition has taken place and it is an opportunity for filmmakers to create a five-minute comedy that has to be put together in just two days. Furthermore, the film has to be made on a seriously shoestring budget.

This year 40 films were created by 300 people and 50 percent of these made the shortlist for the production. 15 of the films entered were from the county of Kent and of those, 12 were chosen and have been shortlisted for the festival.

The timing and financial issues are not the only constraint that the filmmakers have and they also have to involve several items in the film which are stipulated by the organisers of the competition. This year the filmmakers had to include several unusual items including a wedding dress, rubber glove, a mouse, a political event as well as the line, “I can’t do that again, I’m too tired.”

350 entry forms were initially downloaded and the competition has seen entries all the way from Kent to California. The film that Harry Hill guest stars in is the Thora Hird Man, which is a comedy about a lavender black-market that exists in the UK. Obviously there is no such thing and the movie use this to great comic effect. It has been put together by the Whitstable-based filmmakers, Maxine Pearson and Nick Whilty.

Mr Wiltly stated, “I’ve been friends with Harry for about 20 years now and he saw my entry for last year and asked whether he could be in the new production. I knew this was an exciting opportunity for the film and I immediately agreed to it. I hope that maybe we can expand the film to be 30 minutes long and enter other film festivals around the country.

“Harry really likes the film that we have created and even though I offered to change his name in the credits, he said that he wanted to be associated with the film. The short movie also features Shane Attwooll who is one of the stars of the new Titanic television series which is going to be premiering in April.

It also features Nick Wilton and Mark Arden who have previously been involved in short appearances on television. They are all local residents around Whitstable and were very keen to get involved after seeing how much fun it was to put together the movie last year.”

The organiser of the festival is Mick Atherton and he has commented, “It is a free event to attend and it is a great opportunity for the public to come and see some hilarious movies.” Tickets must be booked ahead and the event is taking place on 31 March in Margate. All of the shortlisted films will be shown at the event.

Radioplayer announce launch of TV and mobile phone app

BBC radio and most commercial stations in the UK are brought to the Internet by an Internet platform called Radioplayer. The company just announced they are launching a TV and mobile application in the near future.

Most consumers are not aware that this company are responsible for bringing most radio stations to the Internet and it is expected that the mobile application is going to become the natural place to come to for radio content from the UK.

There are over 300 radio stations in the UK which utilise the company services and it is expected that the application will allow consumers to access them all through their mobile phones. It is also expected that the company are not going to charge for the application on Android and Apple devices.

The managing director of the company is Michael Hill and he said, “There are numerous applications currently on the market that allow you to listen to radio content through a phone, however, the user interfaces on these programmes do not make the best use of smart phone features.

This new application is going to have many advantages over the existing options. For one, it is going to take into consideration things such as the user’s location and taste in music to recommend a local station that caters to their tastes.”

Mr Hill said that he wants to see the application increase the number of people who are listening to the radio. He says that the app is likely to increase the number of people who are listening to radio broadcasts digitally. The application will work either through Wi-Fi or 3G connection.

About the launch of the application Mr Hill said that it will be coming at the same time as the YouView set-top box is launched. This set top box has been long anticipated and it has been backed by the U.K.’s major television channels. Mr Hill has not be more specific about the launch date but there is speculation in the industry that the device is going to launch on May 14, which will also be the date the application from Radioplayer is launched.

He continued, “This application is going to provide people the ability to listen to over 300 radio stations across the country. Not only is this going to benefit the consumer, but it is also going to mean the commercial stations do not need to develop their own application. The BBC as well as most private stations have said that they have no intention of developing their own application once the service from the company has launched.”

Radioplayer have managed to secure a contract with the vast majority of radio stations with over 75 percent of them signing up to the application. About future expansion Mr Hill has said that he is looking to license the player on a global basis. He has also stated that he wants to invest all of the company’s profits back into the business to develop the application further.

About potential international expansion, Mr Hill said that he has recently signed several Russian radio stations onto the company and expect that many more will follow in the near future. The company also stated they are interest in working with radio manufacturers to create what they are calling a ‘hybrid radio.’

Free bus passes available for students at Cornwall College

Cornwall College students aged between 16 and 18 could benefit from free bus travel, thanks to a new scheme which aims to support young people in further education. Only those who live more than three miles from the campus can apply to the Learner Support Bursary Fund for cost of a one-year bus pass covering the area.

Students from families with an annual income of over £31,000 will not be accepted onto the scheme, but Peter Sampson, head of learner services at Cornwall College, was quick to point out that in previous years the upper limit had been much higher, and that the new rule meant more local students would be able to benefit from the extra help with transport costs.

He added that current students at the college, who will be losing their Education Maintenance Allowance for the next academic year, will particularly benefit from financial support with the costs associated with attending the institution. Even those ineligible for the full price of a bus pass can claim up to £300 to help with transport costs, or take advantage of the subsidised schemes run by the college itself.

Teenagers attending any of Cornwall College’s campuses can apply, and the decision will be taken based on where the majority of their lessons take place. There are facilities at Camborne, Saltash St Austell’s and Newquay, while students at the Duchy College campuses in Stoke Climsland and Rosewarne, as well as the Falmouth Marine School, can also apply for the transport funds

Carole Nash offers free DNA+ security kits

images 300x111 Carole Nash offers free DNA+ security kits Motorcyclists taking out new insurance policies with Carole Nash, or even renewing their existing cover, will be given a free security kit to help protect their bike from theft.

The Carole Nash DNA + system, which was trialled at the end of 2011 to great acclaim, proved enormously popular with those customers who were given the sample kits, so the company has decided to make them available to all customers.

Every kit contains its own invisible forensic coding solution, which can be daubed onto the bodywork or other parts of the bike to indelibly, but invisibly, identify who the bike belongs to. The solution is completely safe to use on metal or paintwork and if the bike is stolen, police can use a simple UV light to check for the DNA + marks and return the vehicle to its rightful owner.

Currently, the only way to identify stolen bikes is through the serial numbers on their bodywork; but as most thieves are aware of this, the first thing many do is destroy this or simply take the bike apart so they can sell the parts for cash. Every member of the DNA + scheme is included in a database which the police can use to identify the owner no matter where in the country the bike is eventually found. Membership of the database is free as long as the Carole Nash policy is current.

The pilot scheme at the end of last year saw over 15,000 Carole Nash customers try out the DNA + kit and the comments were universally popular. Retailing at just £30 for those who have their insurance with another company, the kit is both easy to use and gives riders peace of mind that their pride and joy can be tracked down if the worst should happen.

Carole Nash is one of the first motorcycle insurance companies to respond to the “Mark Our Bikes” campaign launched in the Motorcycle News magazine last year, calling for insurers to hand out free identification kits like the DNA + to make the recovery of stolen vehicles a real possibility. According to Motorcycle News’ senior reporter Steve Farrell, the Carole Nash system doesn’t just give riders peace of mind, but gives police a real chance of finding and convicting serial motorcycle thieves.

Nick Baker, director of products and marketing at Carole Nash understands just why the DNA + security kit has proven so popular; bikers become very attached to their machines, often spending long hours and hundreds of pounds on renovations and maintenance and the idea that someone will profit from this hard work by stripping the bike for parts can be heartbreaking for even the toughest motorcyclist.

He added that the decision by Carole Nash to offer the kits for free was not just a marketing gimmick, but a real effort on their part to tackle the growing problem of motorcycle crime. Baker went on to say that the company’s own research had shown that the vast majority of bike owners are more than happy to spend a little extra time and money to do what they can to ensure their bike is as secure as possible.

Bikers who have tested the DNA + kit already agree, with most more than happy to use the security system to provide an extra level of protection for their motorcycle. The fact that the Carole Nash scheme is linked nationwide means that no motorcycle thieves are safe from the reach of the DNA + kit.
