Microsoft MSN video player

Following the astounding success of Channel Four’s ‘on demand’ service and the iPlayer by the BBC, Microsoft has decided to toss its own video player online for free.

The new player will allow viewers to watch a large variety of programmes on the MSN video player including some that are offered from BBC including Hotel Babylon and Hustle.

Microsoft claims that viewers will be able to full series of all shows which is a sharp contrast to the iPlayer from the BBC which only lets viewers watch programming that has aired within the last week.  On the BBC player, episodes are only available for one week past the time they were originally aired.

Some of the shows included will be Dead Ringers, Sahara, Cutting It, and Peep Show.  However, the service will not be quite as current as the iPlayer’s offerings since it will start with only the first or second seasons of the programmes some of which may have debuted a few years ago.

Although the MSN player is available for download free, like most online viewing formats viewers will need to watch a few short advertisements throughout the broadcast.

In order to offer a large variety of programming, Microsoft has struck deals with several broadcasters and studios including RDF Media, Endemol, Digital Rights Group, and Shed Media.

The company is also looking to secure deals with major film studios so that movies can be offered on the service as well.

Additionally, all shows can be viewed in HD if the viewer wishes by installing Silverlight as well.
