FreeView has started a battle with BSkyBtoday for HDTV viewers after completing research that supposedly states that over 350,000 Sky+HD homes are thinking of switching to Freeview for their digital terrestrial television provider over the course of the next six months.
Currently about ten million UK homes use Freeview in order to get digital TV. Within the next month and a half Freeview plans to launch its new HD service complete with set top boxes that are estimated to cost around £130 to access three HD channels: Channel 4, BBC, and ITV1. By the end of the year Freeview is also likely to add a fourth channel, Channel Five.
The survey reported that 17% or 360,000 homes were planning to switch to Freeview HD with the last 18% still using analogue TV at home planning to switch Freeview HD. Today the company plans to launch its new offering with the tag line, ‘buy now, watch today, free forever
