Free food buying advice from NHS

A new health programme aimed at educating families in how to choose which foods to buy that will improve their health, is being backed by Mind, Exercise, Nutrition…Do It!.

NHS Manchester and the city council are providing the funding for free tutoring and fieldtrips to supermarkets. To qualify a family must reside in Gorton, Wythenshawe, or Harpurhey and prove their low income status.

Normally, this kind of assistance would run around £425, but the families in the programme will not have to pay. In addition to their residence and low income status, they must also have a pre-teen between the ages of 7 and 13 who is medically obese. It is estimated that around 32 families will enter the programme, requiring a £12500 bill.

Parents and children will work together to help the child lose weight. The parents will have targets for the weight loss and the child will have to complete a daily routine. The families will be accompanied to a local supermarket where the children will be taught how to evaluate labels on foods, encouraging them to eat fruits and vegetables in place of junk food.

Manchester rates top in the area for overweight people. 25% of children between 10-11 years old are overweight and around 23% of all adults – taken from the child measurement programme.

NHS Manchester’s spokesperson gave the same old line on how this programme will reduce health care costs related to obesity. Whether those savings will ever be seen, we do know that the programme will improve children’s focus in school and there sense of self worth.

Independent schools offering free places

Some independent schools will shortly put aside education costs for sixth forms for selected state school pupils. The Evening Standard reports that some 100 students will receive bursaries to study a range of chosen endangered subjects important to our economy.

Arranged by the Headmasters and Headmistresses’ Conference (HMC), physics, chemistry and languages will be offered for study at member institutions. HMC Chairman and Headmaster of City London School, David Levin explained to the media that the country needs high-quality engineers and foreign language people able to market these products. Universities are short of pupils in these subjects but raising funds to cover costs has proved a challenge.

There is urgent need to better science and mathematic specialisation here where these subjects have lost their appeal compared to other areas. The University of Cambridge managed the Millemium Mathematics Project which targets students in the 5 – 19 age groups. It consists of a number of specially focused projects namely Stimulus, the Enigma Project, Hands-On Maths Roadshow and Risk and Probability Show.

National Rich Mathematics (NRICH) staff have visited schools both locally and abroad for these workshops. Adding value to the sixth form places project is the East of England Further Mathematics Support Programme, which provides teaching support and further maths study promotion to A-Level.

The general public are able to view the websites Plus, Maths and Sport: Countdown to the Games and NRICH to gain a better understanding of maths and science.

Children love toys, but they don’t necessarily love expensive toys. The cliché of a child playing with the box and ignoring the toy is sometimes true. This means you can buy great toys without breaking the bank. Indeed, one toy might be twice as expensive as another, but that does not mean it is any better. So examine the toys that your child likes and find ones that hold a similar appeal: you’ll find that this helps you buy the best toy, not necessarily the most expensive toy.

Toys are a great thing, yet they shouldn’t be backbreaking economically. But if you’re not careful you can spend a tremendous amount on them, far more than they are worth. By shopping intelligently, taking advantage of sales, coupons and buying toys that are fun rather than expensive, you can save a great deal of money. Best of all, you can do this and still give you’re a child a great Christmas or Birthday.

Times newspaper free on 3G UK

The Times newspaper and 3G UK have struck a deal to make the newspaper available in electronic form free of charge to 3G UK mobile systems users for three months.

3G UK is excited to offer the promotion to its customers saying that it is the perfect information integration at a time when many more people are getting their news digitally than ever before. With a 97 per cent population exposure for 3G users, the system will dramatically expand the digital access of the Times.

After the three month trial, any PAYG customers who pay up their service every thirty days will be sent the Times and Sunday Times newspapers for that month. Contract customers can get both papers for a fee of £2 weekly.

The Times recently announced that it will be charging for web access for its papers in an effort to sustain revenue.

Free solar power

UK electricity customers and energy companies are benefiting from the (FIT) Feed In Tariffs for solar energy. SSE (Scottish Southern Energy) is the latest to offer free installation and free electricity to customers in return for 25 years of generation and export tariffs earned by the panels.

SSE follows along with other companies like ISIS Solar and A Shade Greener, who are offering similar deals. Many homeowners would like to profit from free electricity generated by solar panels, but find the installation costs too daunting. SSE and the other companies are removing those concerns by installing the panels for no charge in return for the tariff proceeds gained by feeding electricity back into the grid.

Under these deals, the customer agrees to turn over the tariff rights to the energy company in exchange for free installation and free electricity.

Based on a regular three bedroom home, equipped with ten solar panels, it is estimated that consumers can save as much as £130 on electricity during the first year. This is calculated upon the customer using 50 per cent of the electricity produced by the solar panels for their own home.

The deal is a win for consumers who can save money on their electric bill and a win for the energy companies who will be using a network of homes to generate electricity they can sell back into the grid.

The introduction of the tariffs is creating a whole new economy around renewable energy production. It doesn’t hurt that it is a mutually beneficial system for consumers and corporations, says an insider.

British Gas offer free wall cavity insulation

Vodafone’s pay as you go iPhone 4 seems to be a hit, if initial sales are any indication. They are sold out already, and if you want one you’ll have to get on the waiting list. Apple’s decision to offer the iPhone 4 unlocked on a PAYG basis is an innovation in the industry, and informed watchers expect this to be the start of a trend.

Vodafone is offering the Apple 16GB iPhone 4 for £480 and the 32GB for £570. To add extra incentive, anyone who buys the device before November this year gets 12 months of free mobile internet and BT Openzone WiFi.

Of course critics say that the free 250MB per month of internet allowance is insufficient, but that’s if you’re a heavy surfer. The pay as you go option should be great for users who want all the stylish perks on an occasional basis. Calls to mobile or landline networks are 20p per minute, text messages 10p.

TalkTalk free broadband for up to a year

TalkTalk launched a new deal yesterday that offers customers a chance to get free broadband for up to a year including weekend and evening calls. In order to get the free call time, consumers must agree to an 18 month contract and pay the line rental for TalkTalk at £11.49 per month.

The deal is basically the Essentials package from the provider which offers free 24MB broadband, free evening and weekend, free router, and a 40GB monthly download allowance, only instead of paying £6.99 a month plus line rental it’s free.

Broadbandandchoices.co.uk product director, Michael Philips, stated that offering a year of free calls and broadband is a cutthroat move by TalkTalk in an effort to get new customers out of a market that is increasingly becoming hard to manoeuvre in.

Philips added that the move may however remind some of the 2006 TalkTalk offer for free broadband which caused many to sign up but resulted in disaster since the company could not keep up with the high demand.

He stated that this time things should run smoother since they have been able to build the company’s image and is top in customer satisfaction now.

The savings are estimated to be about £143.89 per year for customers of BT Talk and Surf that switch to the new TalkTalk plan instead.
