ISPreview has recently reported that BT has released details of the first of its ‘Autumn Deals.’ The telecommunications provider is offering four months free internet access as well as offering unlimited evening and weekend calls or the same period.

The contract normally costs £13 a month but those who are signing to a year and a half deal will have the first four months at no cost. The deal can only be taken out if you shop for it online. The broadband access comes with a 10 gigabyte cap and speeds of up to 20Mbps. The package also includes a free broadband router so you can access the internet wirelessly in your home. Subscribers are also entitled to significant online storage as well as email addresses provided by Yahoo!

The calls that come with the package are available to be made to other BT landlines. BT are also offering some of their range of telephones half price and postage is free. The fastest internet the BT offer is also on offer and this allows for a 40mbps connection with a 40 gigabyte per month cap. This costs £18 a month but is available for £7.50 for the initial three months.

Plus a free router that is up to 15 times faster than other routers comes with the Orange package. This offer, however, is only for those that sign up online for a broadband contract of 18 months. Discounts are available to those that are existing customers.

Mobile phone retailers are recognising the power of the e-book and the need to compete with the iPad. Best Buy UK and Carphone Warehouse are both offering the Amazon Kindle free with contract phones, from as little as £15 per month. If buyers want to add 3G, they can pay another £15 per month, which is still much cheaper than it is currently available. Both retailers are also matching the Amazon price of the Kindle, when sold separately.

Gordon Willoughby of Amazon said that Amazon was pleased to be working with both retailers, which gave Amazon the opportunity to reach as wide an audience with the Kindle as possible. There are currently nearly 900,000 titles available for the Kindle, which can also be read on your computer or phone. You can even read your book on one device, then switch to another device and pick up exactly where you left off, due to clever software.

Of course, the Kindle is not for everyone, and if you do not think that you will use it, you can always just shop around for the best deal for your chosen mobile phone. There are also of course plenty of people who will never switch from their traditional books, but, whatever your preference, mobile phone providers will continue to bend over backwards to try and accommodate you.

A decent mobile network for London’s Tube system has proved beyond mobile technology providers for almost a decade, with the main sticking point apparently being able to produce a system that is commercially viable. With the Olympics almost upon us, in 2012, the issue has been given fresh impetus. Commuters will want to know what’s happening in the Olympics and lack of a decent signal underground could be a real problem.

Huawei Technologies, a multi-billion dollar Chinese mobile service provider, has offered $80 million to create a new network for the Tube. It had been reported recently that Transport for London has been in talks with network providers in the UK to provide a system, but the move from Huawei may have derailed those talks.

The Mayor of London Boris Johnson and Transport for London have been trying to find a solution to the problem in consultation with mobile service providers, but a stumbling block has been cost – with the Olympics costing so much money to stage, any solution is likely to have to be funded by the mobile company that takes on the operation. The benefit to the company, of course, would be hopefully a reward that matches the risk, in terms of increased revenue and publicity.
