118 118, the directory enquiries service is going to be giving free lifts to those in London this week as a fleet of cabs bearing the company’s logo are heading out onto the streets. There are 10 taxis being released this Thursday and they will be running for six hours between 6 PM and 12 AM. For those who manage to catch one of these taxis they will be entitled to a free lift anywhere within the first two zones of the London Underground.

The company said that they are running this publicity stunt because Thursday is expected to be the busiest day for cabs in the whole year. William Ostrom is the chief communications director for the company and he has commented, “We have decided to do this on Thursday because it is going to be the busiest day of the year and our branded cabs serve as a reminder that taxis can easily be arranged through our directory service.”

Adverts have been run on the London Underground and there has been publicity in the Metro newspaper about the deal so people on the streets are going to know that if they see a taxi bearing the 118 118 logo that they are going to be up able ride in it for free. The promotion is also going to be tied in with the social network site Facebook and those using the mobile application will be able to highlight where they are by GPS and if they are lucky a cab will come and pick them up.

This latest publicity stunt as part of an advertising campaign called ‘Everyone’s Little Helper’ and is promoting the directory enquiries service as something able to help people solve their Christmas problems. It can provide lots of information about services this Christmas time.

Citroen has recently introduced what they call the most powerful and greenest models of LCVs ever. Adding an incentive for purchasers of these vehicles, Citroen is also offering a year’s worth of free gas, the equivalent of about 10,000 miles on the road.  The offer begins 1 September (tomorrow) and is open to anyone who is buying outright, by Elect 3 Pro or hire purchase, with certain conditions, and excluding the National Fleet.

The company is in the vanguard of fuel-efficient vehicles with its stated aims of lower emissions along with even more power.  This new offer is part of Citroen’s “Business Class’ campaign, intended to benefit small businesses and owner/operators in the private sector.  Commercial vehicle operations manager Scott Michael said that getting the twofold benefits of driving one of the world’s most cost-efficient LCVs and not having to buy gas for a year will be especially helpful for struggling businesses.

In the first half of 2011, more than 4/5 of the total 6,100 Citroen LCV models sold in the private business sector were sold at business centres, and they are key in the company’s marketing strategy.

According to Martin Hamill, head of Citroen’s commercial vehicles and business arm, those centres are able to provide better service to business customers both in professional sales and follow-up services; he said the result has been an increase in sales to business customers over the past year.

The fuel offer will be implemented with prepaid debit MasterCard cards that are accepted at more than 25 million establishments around the world.  Customers will also benefit from the Trafficmaster Smartnav system, unique to Citroen, that will be standard equipment in Relay, Berlingo and Dispatch panel vans.  Scott Michael said the high-tech satellite navigation package will help drivers use their free fuel even more efficiently and save them more money over the long term.

Ecotricity, a renewable energy company aims to provide charge points for electric vehicles at locations throughout UK motorways. The scheme promotes green energy and alleviates anxieties of drivers worried about battery power.

The scheme; national-charging-network on completion will have 27 spots along the motorways at Welcome-Break servicing stations and provides free charging. Ecotricity has announced all electricity provided is through the company’s green energy sources.

Currently 400 spots in cities provide charging, with 250 in London. National-charging-network will allow journeying away from cities, encouraging electric vehicle use. Ecotricity founder Mr Vince said ‘‘Charging points are needed less in city centres and more on motorways between cities, where cars need to be recharged’’.

Ecotricity will install the first charge point in July at South-Mimms station and plan installation in Somerset, South Lanarkshire, Hertfordshire and many others, with all points in place within 18 months.

Following registering for a free swipe-card at Ecotricity website, drivers can recharge their vehicles. Charge points will contain sockets and be situated outside the station entrance. Partial charging takes 20 minutes, while vehicle can be fully charged in 2 hours using rapid recharging points. Slow charging available for those staying at hotels.

Aside environmental benefits, drivers travelling the typical 12,000 miles a year can save £2,000 on fuel while producing 2,500 kg of less CO2. Mr Vince stated ‘‘Petrol prices are sky high, costing 10 pence a mile whereas electricity costs 1 pence a mile, allowing travelling the UK using wind power alone’’

At present 2,000 pure and several hundred hybrid electric vehicles are on UK roads and this figure will rise as car manufacturers start launching more electric models, requiring more charge points. Mr Vince commented ‘‘Ecotricity aims to build the infrastructure that initiates UK electric vehicle revolution marking the decline of the combustion engines’’.

Lord Flight said they agreed to help with fundraising after mentioning that they could not just walk away after having put a great deal of time into Croome Court.

The head of the Malvern-based sports car company, Charles Morgan, donated the Morgan 4/4 sports car when approached by Lady Flight. The £5 tickets for the raffle remain on sale until May 31 and the National Trust website has details for those interested.
